Eridanus and Zaurack on King Arthur’s Round Table

Here is a rather interesting copy of Katherine Maltwood’s Round Table of the Zodiac. (click images for higher resolution)

The first thing that jumps out at me is that, unlike her original Round Table, KEM (Katherine Emma Maltwood) has gone out of her way to turn this copy of the map 90 degrees counterclockwise so that north is facing left instead of it usual upright position.

She had labelled all of the Zodiac Signs (except for Cancer and Libra) as well as the usual Cetus, Orion (Gemini?) and Hercules (King Arthur/Sagittarius) but did not label the Argo Navis. In addition KEM also labelled the constellations Eridanus (the River) and Hydra (the Water Serpent/Snake).

She marked the pole of the Ecliptic on Hercules/King Arthur/Sagittarius arm and labelled only two stars on this map. Kochab, which she calls the polestar of the Temple from the constellation Ursa Minor, falls on Park Wood in the centre of the map and Zaurack (which means ‘bright Star of the Boat’) from the constellation Eridanus, falls on the Sail/Bow of the Argo Navis Effigy.

On the back of the map, which KEM unfortunately did not date, she wrote ‘This is the one to use but leave out Castor & Pollox. Hydra & Eridanus & Canis Minor (which she didn’t actually label). She also marked ‘bright Star of the boat’ on the back.

The labeling of Eridanus and Zaurack on the map above as well as the Snake/River looking ‘effigy’ between the Girt Dog of Langport and the Rudder of the Argo Navis in the January 28, 1946 map below, leads me to believe that KEM was in the process of discovering/developing an Eridanus River effigy which I believe was going to relate to the third/Cancer water gate and original entrance to the Temple.

Earth and Water Gates of Glastonbury’s Temple of the Stars

Earth & Water Gates of Glastonbury's Temple of the Stars Landscape Zodiac 3

In Chapter II, THE EARTH SIGN, VIRGO, of ‘A Guide to Glastonbury’s Temple of the Stars’, Katherine Maltwood has the following to say in regards to Earth and Water Gates of ‘the Temple’.

Gates On the Sun’s Path

“Bab Cary is (though she later changed this to ‘may be’) the Virgin’s Gate on the Fosse Way. As gates play an important part in traditions of the Temple, three land gates, and three water gates, that lie within a radius of three and a half miles from the centre at Butleigh, are here suggested.

The early British road along the hills of Mendip, that crosses the Fosse Way at Beacon Hill, sends a branch road to West Pennard, there to enter the earth sign Capricornus; this constellation was called ‘The Gate of the Gods.’

Westwards, the third land entrance would have been by the Polden Hills, on the road along Walton Hill to Taurus.

The Scorpion water gate on the river Brue was called Lydford, it was the gate of death next to the gate of life in Virgo.

The second water gate lower down the Brue was the most famous, it was by Pomparles Bridge at the entrance to King Fisherman’s Castle, in Pisces.

The third was on the Cary river called Somerton Gate.

But perhaps the original entrance to the Kingdom of Logres was by the River Parrett, where the effigy of the great Dog guards the junction with the old course of the Cary. Large ships could navigate the entire outline of the under part of this ‘shining hound,‘ swept along on the flood of the tidal bore. “Messire Gawain seeth the entrance of the gateway foul and horrible like as it had been hell.” High History. Branch 2. Title 3.

Bab is the Arab’s word for gate, and it is remarkable that this original place name by the Fosse Way should remain, close to where Virgo’s hand, holding out her bouquet of corn, breaks the typical straightness of that highway; this divergence exactly marks the centre of the month of September in correspondence with the degrees on the modern planisphere.”

The Girt Dog of Langport guards the Gates of the Temple and Cancer is the Gates. Note Westerngate and Middlegate Roads on the head of the Cancer effigy. Note also, KEMs Eridanus (River) effigy between the two. Could this be the third/Cancer Water Gate???

The following maps also shows a bit of the Eridanus River looking effigy. Unfortunately the surround O.S. Sheet which would contain the rest of the effigy are nowhere to be found.

Zodiac Wheel at the Galactic Centre of the VLZ (Victoria Landscape Zodiac)

Just finished laying out a Zodiac Wheel patio in our backyard and wanted to share the results.

Crushed Brick Complete

See details below.

Zodiac Wheel Drawing

The design came to me one night while I was out ‘meditating’ in the backyard, under the starry sky. Drew a rough draft and it turned out that our old patio had the exact number of patio stones necessary to make this design. Created a more accurate drawing on the computer to get the exact size and layout (above).

Laying out the Circle

Measured to find the centre of our yard and drove a metal rod into the ground from which to take all other measurements.  It turned out that we had just enough room to layout the design in our small yard. Dug out the grass and sifted the soil beneath for pebbles and rocks to be used later.

Screeding the Soil

Built a wooden dodecagon (12 sided) frame around the perimeter of the circle to be used for measuring and leveling the soil.

Screeding

Made a wooden screed which sat on the dodecagon frame and was attached to the metal rod in the centre. Placed several patio stones on the screed for weight and made a rope harness with which to pull the screed around the circle. Sorry no action photos. Screed the soil so that there is about a 1 1/2″ drop from the centre to the edges for water run off. Note the pile of sifted pebbled and patio stones in the top right corner.

Laying out the Patio Stones

With the soil leveled,  took a blue tarp (that was destined for the dump and just happened to be the size needed) and stretched it out over the soil to assist water run off and prevent the growth of weeds. Attached a piece of string to the metal rod to assist with placing the patio stones at correct distances and angles.

Adding the Rope

Several rainy days and nights under canopy tent and tarps sifting soil for pebbles, scrubbing and placing patio stones. Note sifting and patio stone washing table in the bottom right corner.

Patio Stone Layout Complete

Patio stone layout complete. Cut off the excess blue tarp and added ropes around the perimeter and centre circle.

Zodiac Wheel Drawing 2

165 patio stones. 60 stones perimeter and 12 spoke wheel (12 hours and 60 minutes) orientated to the 4 cardinal directions. North, south, east and west representing the solstices and equinoxes.

Adding the Gravel

Pebbles added to form the Fixed Cross (midpoints between the cardinal directions). Wooden dodecagon frame removed.

Crushed Brick Complete

Zodiac Wheel layout complete. Hand crushed brick added to the cardinal points forming a Templar Cross with overlaying, reversed, double barred Lorraine’s crosses.

Templar CrossLorraine's Cross

Templar Cross (left) and Cross of Lorraine (right) which is also associated with the Knights Templar.

Finishing Touches

Plans for the near future adornment of our Zodiac Wheel. Thinking of adding key words for the signs, planets, house, qualities and elements which can be meditated upon as one walks the Zodiac.

Hosting an opening-blessing ceremony and 3 dimensional intro to astrology workshop on Spring Equinox.
